Statue of Liberty

June 17, 1885 the statue of Liberty arrived! A gitft of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, arrives in New York City's harbor.

On June 19, 1885, the dismantled Satue arrived in the New World, enclosed in more than 200 packing cases. Its copper sheets were reassembeled on Bedloe's Island, and the last rivet of the monument was fitted on October 28, 1886. It is 151 feet tall. On the pedestal was inscribed "The New Colossus", by poet Emma Lazarus that welcomed immigrants to the US with the declaration, " Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Six years later, Ellis Island, adjacent to Bedloe's Island were the statue stands, Opened as the chief entry station for immigrants to the US, and for the next 32 years more than 12 million immigrants were welcomed into New York harbor by the sight of "Lady Liberty".

I agree, things like this are fascinating to me now. If I could do school all over again, and bring my adult brain with me, I'd probably ace every test!:o)
We read some books about Irish immigrants (my ancestors) and Ellis Island a couple years ago.It was something what people went through to get here & start a new life!

I have thought the same thing many times! We had to much other to deal with to focus on school!

Sad but true. Ya won't catch me begging to live those years over again! Ya can't erase it but I'm happy to see there's good healing in trying to give my own kids the kind of childhood I wish I'd had, don't you think so too? :o)

But even if I'd had a perfect life, I just found so much in school boring and pointless and hard to relate to...and memorize!! Life's better and more exciting now that I can pick and choose the topics, poke around at it my own way, and share whatever bits amaze or annoy me with somebody else, just because. :o)
I'm so glad a teacher didn't ruin sewing for you! Where would you be right now?!

I know I think it is terrible they are taking away hands on learning for the student who learns best that way! I think I'd go crazy if I had to go through high school now days! I hated not being able to move in some of those classes the way it was 20 some years ago! ;)
